The Nosterfield Project

The Nosterfield section of the APC web site will soon be superceded by the Thornborough section, currently in preparation.

Nosterfield is situated in North Yorkshire, approximately 8 kilometres north of Ripon, and is the location of an ongoing archaeological investigation focusing on the Nosterfield Quarry, operated by Tarmac. The current investigation, which began in 1995, has revealed aspects of an immensely rich prehistoric landscape around the Thornborough Henges. The known elements of this landscape include henges, barrows, cursuses, and pit alignments, representing the most extensive complex of this type in the British Isles. Evidence relating to the Roman, post-Roman and Medieval periods has also been encountered.

Because archaeological work is ongoing, and a final publication is therefore not anticipated for some years, this web site is designed to present the results so far of the fascinating discoveries that have been unearthed. The content will be updated as new fieldwork is initiated and the analysis of past work is absorbed. For a list of the latest updates to the site, please refer to the news & updates page.

The links at the top left of this page provide general information on the Nosterfield project and archaeological procedures employed. The content of these pages is derived from a public exhibition, prepared by Field Archaeology Specialists Limited and Mike Griffiths & Associates, which will be displayed at the Quarry site in the near future. The links at the lower left provide a route to further information or access to more in-depth analytical text, such as the specialist reports catalogue which will be updated as and when new material becomes available.
