The topsoil stripping has ceased for the time being and we have now started digging some of the features that have shown up. The two ditches on the eastern side of the site are a continuation of a field system that was recorded in 2011. They are quite unusual because rather than being straight they are quite irregular and appear to respect the line of the old stream to the east. Only a few pieces of animal bone have so far been recovered from their backfill.
Next week we will carry on digging and are expecting a site visit from North Yorkshire County Council’s archaeologist to review the findings so far.
Topsoil stripping has continued this week in the northern part of the site. So far about seventy soil features have been flagged up for further investigation. These include two probable ditches, three possible pits or post holes and a large number of what appear to be tree boles and natural features.
Next week we intend to start digging and recording some of the features and will keep you updated with the results.
