Topography & Environment


The Thornborough Henges are situated within a monument complex in the low lying land between the River Ure and River Swale. This complex extends from The Devil's Arrows at Boroughbridge in the south, perhaps as far as Catterick Henge in the north. The general landscape topography is illustrated below, showing lowland in dark green progressing to the highest ground shown in brown.

The image below illustrates the topography in the immediate vicinity of Nosterfield Quarry. The topographic data is based on observations made over a number of years, which have suggested that in the immediate environs of Ladybridge Farm the 41.50 metre contour marks the transition between dry and marsh land. Areas below this contour are shown in blue, while areas above are shown in green rising through yellow, orange and brown as elevation increases. The topographic model is likely to change as more terrain and hydrology data becomes available.
