Period 2
This report concentrates on the few securely stratified assemblages of Roman
pottery found. The report is divided into two sections. In the first, the pottery
is described and summarised by ware, and form, where possible using Monaghan's corpus (1993).
In the second section, the assemblages are described feature by feature. Finally, a
reconstruction is attempted of pottery use and deposition on the Blue Bridge Lane site.
Period 3
A total of 244 sherds of Saxon pottery were analysed, with seven pottery
wares represented. The wares and feature assemblages are discussed individually
and the results of thin-section and chemical analyses presented. The source
of pottery at the site, and the date of settlement suggested by the pottery,
is discussed.
Period 4
A report on assemblages of pottery recovered from Period 4 contexts at Blue
Bridge Lane and Fishergate House. The residual and intrusive pottery is discussed
and the contemporary Period 4 assemblages discussed and catalogued.
Period 5
A report on assemblages of pottery recovered from Period 5 contexts at Blue Bridge
Lane and Fishergate House. The residual and intrusive pottery is discussed
and the contemporary Period 5 assemblages discussed and catalogued.
Period 6
A report on assemblages of pottery recovered from Period 6 contexts at Blue Bridge
Lane and Fishergate House. The residual and intrusive pottery is discussed
and the contemporary Period 6 assemblages discussed and catalogued.
Humberware
The document reports on the thin sectioning and chemical analysis of seven
samples of pottery from the kiln found during excavations at Blue Bridge Lane.
Results suggest that a single clay source was used to make the pottery, possibly
derived from the Jurassic rocks of the Howardian or Hambledon Hills. The chemical
analysis of this pottery suggests that it can be distinguished from similar
wares produced elsewhere in Yorkshire or Lincolnshire.
