Diary entry for 2007-04-20 Posted by Guy
The fieldwork for the southern part of the Ladybridge fieldwalking exercise was completed today (with a chip lunch in Masham to celebrate). We now have an assemblage of 1,750 artefacts to look at over the weekend and the beginning of next week, with the aim of releasing an interim report late next week.
Thankfully the majority of the finds collected are glazed pottery and fragments of cbm, all (or at least most) of which are post-medieval/modern in date, and can be processed fairly quickly. Looks like I'm getting the boring stuff to look at while Dick plays with nice flint things...
Postscript - 2007-04-22, 11:55pm.
After a busy weekend, and sitting in a flat strewn with post-medieval pottery
etc, the fieldwalking finds and survey data have now been processed. The four
images below show the distribution of cbm, pottery, lithics, and lithics by
type (implement, utilised and waste) over the topographic model of the site.
The topographic model used is based on survey data provided by Tarmac Ltd,
and a more refined model of the southern part of the field based on the surveyed
artefact heights is currently in preparation. Purple denotes highest ground, through brown, orange, yellow green, cyan and finally blue for the lowest areas.

This past week has seen rapid progress with the fieldwalking, largely because we have moved away from the high density area in the southwest corner of the field.
The total number of artefacts now collected stands at 1347. In terms of artefact density this is a significantly larger assemblage than that collected by FAS in the previous phase of fieldwalking at Ladybridge (1460 from the entire field), and is probably due to ground conditions during the FAS survey, when a young relatively dense cereal crop partially obscured the ground surface during the first phase of that investigation. It does, however, give us rather more finds to deal with than had been anticipated! As we are all pretty tired after trudging up and down in the hot weather this week, we're having a weekend off and won't be processing finds and survey data, so the finds and their distribution by type/date will not be available until the entire first phase has been walked (which should be complete by the end of next week).
Despite finding much more material, the distribution of artefacts corresponds very well with that of the FAS investigation, and the lithic material in particular is markedly constrained to the higher areas within the field. The overall distribution of all artefacts so far is illustrated to the right. Photos for this week are a couple of shots showing working conditions and a selection of the finds - mainly the lithics, which are after all the most interesting. A selection of gun cartridges recovered would probably have been a bit dull.
