Artefacts & Environmental Evidence: The Human Bone

Malin Holst HND BA MSc

2.1 Introduction

Osteological analysis of human remains is concerned with the determination of the identity of a skeleton, by assessing its age, sex and stature. Robusticity and non-metric traits can provide further information on the appearance and familial affinities of the individuals studied. This information is fundamental to palaeodemographic studies and to calculating prevalence rates of disease types and age-related changes. Determination of age and sex is crucial for the analysis of gender roles, gender dimorphism in occupation, lifestyle, diet, health, mortality and survival, as well as the role of different age groups in society.
