Ladybridge Farm Evaluation - Evaluation Trenches

Now that the harvest is in, the final phase of archaeological evaluation is underway at Ladybridge Farm.

A total of twenty trenches are currently being machined open across the northern and western areas of the proposal area. This scheme of trenching follows a reconnaissance programme of fieldwalking and geophysical survey undertaken earlier this year which detected a scatter of flint implements and linear anomalies in the fields around Ladybridge Farm (see update, 19th December 2003). The south-eastern quarter of the proposal area has already been the subject of archaeological evaluation where seven trenches were excavated earlier in March 2004.

The current phase of evaluation comprises eleven 100m x 4m trenches, seven 50m x 4m trenches and two 50m x 8m trenches. In addition to this a further ninety five 1m squares will be hand excavated through the ploughsoil and sieved for artefacts.

A total of four 100m x 4m and three 50m x 4m trenches are being excavated, which represents a 2% sample of the south-eastern area of the site.

This phase of evaluation is due to finish by the beginning of September after which time preliminary results will be provided in an update.
