Watching Brief, Spring 1995. Summary Details
Fieldwork Spring 1995.
Three areas, labelled Area 1-3 (Phase 1a Tilcon).
Areas 1 & 2 topsoil stripped onto gravel, Area 3 topsoil and marl removed together.
Area 1
(aka Trench 4)
Western edge abutted old quarry workings, along the side was a strip of dessicated peat (the edge of the lake), elsewhere topsoil directly over gravel. An area of clay subsoil 50x30m observed cut by land drains (stone filled). Features absent from clay and peaty margins. 83 features identified, 13 were hearths and 70 pits; their distribution formed two loose groups. Pits included Sink Holes. 38 features excavated, remainder surveyed, described and photographed, the majority “roughly dug...to retrieve finds”. Some features classified - Hearth A-C, Pits 1-3. Finds included pottery and lithics.
Area 2

On the higher ground were three features C2001-2003
2002 produced pottery, 2003 flint

Area 3 Situated on the western edge of the new gravel processing site in the Flasks. Extensive deposits of peat & marl over gravel, up to 1m deep. Peat & marl removed at the same time and only limited recording possible. Produced a modern field boundary represented by a low bank of stones and a ditch adjacent to the bank; and 4 circular pits
