Fieldwork | April & September 1998 & April 1999 (FAS Interventions
1 & 2) Large area to the west of new haul road & southwest of gravel processing site, excavated in 1998 (Intervention1 East) and 1999 (Intervention 1 West). |
---|---|
Intervention 1 | Produced scatters of pits, land drains and sink holes. Features truncated & clustered around break of slope on higher ground excavated in second season. Some of the pits were natural or animal burrows. Three deep sink holes sampled by monolith and column down to subsoil. Northern edge of excavation coincided with edge of prehistoric lake, in-filled by marl and covered with peat, upper levels now dessicated. Drains clustered around sink holes, ? deliberately in-filled/levelled up. Margins of in-filled lake also sampled. A few pits produced a scatter of cremated animal bone. Finds included lithics and prehistoric pottery. |
Intervention 2 | Walkover survey of area of same area as Intervention 1
West. Carried out during the W/B area in 1999, survey restricted to the drier areas which over look the peaty areas to the east & north of Int.1 & the east of Int.2. During excavation noticed a general spread of material apparently on the subsoil surface, not coincident with any features/contexts, possibly represent the ploughed out remains of archaeological anomalies. Material mostly consisted of lithics, all finds surveyed. |
Output | Finds archive. Photographic archive. Feature & context record cards. Map of drains and boundaries. Finds distributions from Intervention 2 (AutoCAD drawing), approximately 58 finds.
