Fieldwork | September 1999. Watching brief covered a smaller area than the contour survey (Intervention 3); limited to the larger of the two fields on the west side of the Flasks. |

Intervention 4 | Remains consisted of a few sink holes, one (F6) not seen
during surface mapping, a short length of pit alignment (one pit contained
Torksey ware and CBM) and land drains. The sink holes were wet and well defined, one contained the remains of a jaw from a robust elk. Along the east side, the water table was a significant problem, however the presence of peat and marl indicated the former margins of the prehistoric lake. The soft subsoils meant that access was restricted for health and safety reasons, both the peat and the marl was removed together to gravel (eg.F9 not excavated). |
