Investigation 14 ~ Watching Brief, 2002 & 2003 (Int. 5 southwest).
Field Archaeology Specialists Ltd.

Watching Brief, 2002 & 2003. Summary Details
Fieldwork April to June 2002, September 2003.
An area of higher ground which overlooked Intervention 5 NW.
Intervention 5 sw The remains of linear features/structures ditches, pit alignments, furrows and land drains.
Furrows aligned NW-SE, same direction as a ditch identified as a hedge line.
More substantial ditches ran N-S, one ran E-W and appears to mark the limit of archaeological activity.
Three ring ditches were investigated, one significantly larger than the others was associated with burials in pits nearby (inhumed), or inside the ring ditch (cremation).
A scatter of other cremations more loosely associated with one of the other ring ditches, but also in small pits and often accompanied by pottery vessel.
Other disarticulated fragments of human bone recovered from one of the pit alignments, suggesting this pit alignment later in the sequence than the burials.
Other features of note included a Roman kiln (archaeo-magnetically dated ), two wells and a group of large sink holes, (without shafts).
Two areas of overburden were mapped and are likely to have obscured other features.
A second limited session of W/B took place in the NW corner in 2003 when part of the perimeter bund was removed, it contained two small pits, on the same general line as a pit alignment.
