Two samples were subjected to a system of flotation and wet-sieving. The floating debris (the flot) was collected in sieves of mesh sizes 0.3 mm and 1 mm and the non-floating residue (the retent) was wet-sieved through a 1 mm mesh. All flot material above 1 mm was sorted by trained technicians using binocular microscopes and any items of archaeological or ecological interest were removed for later identification. All retent material sorted was by eye or with the use of a low-powered magnifying lens and again any items of interest routinely removed.

The charred plant component consisted of only two elements, hazel shell and wood charcoal. They offer little basis for discussion of the nature of the contexts from which they were recovered but would provide sufficient material for a radiocarbon date if required.
